BGS provides educational opportunities to the membership and the public. This is done by providing workshops and seminars on the methods and standards used in genealogy and historical research.
BGS fosters and encourages the interest in recording family history.
BGS maintains working relationships with other genealogical and historical organizations promoting our common interest.
The Society promotes the collection of genealogical and historical books and makes them available to the public at The Catherine Schweinsberg Rood Library in Cocoa, Florida.
The Florida State Genealogical Society presented to Brevard Genealogical Society this award for "Genealogy Outstanding Achievement" in recognition of our contribution to the field of Florida Genealogy and/or History for 5 years, 10 November 2006.
History
In 1968 the Brevard Chapter of The Southern Genealogist’s Exchange Society was formed. The Charter Members were:

The name was changed to the Brevard Genealogical Society on 11 February 1975, and bylaws were adopted. On 13 November 1989, Articles of Incorporation were filed and the Society became "Brevard Genealogical Society, Inc.", a not-for-profit corporation, effective 1 January 1990.
