“Establishing Generational Relationships Prior to the 1880 Census”

This presentation shows difficulties in inferring generational relationships from the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses and then explores numerous types of records that the researcher might consult to establish such relationships.  Record groups include vital records, probate records, land records, military records, and civil and criminal court records. Records that involve the dower rights of a wife are a surprisingly rich source of information for establishing generational links.  The presentation includes numerous examples from actual records to illustrate the types of information each record group contains as well as how to use that information to establish family relationships.
